Middle East premiere for Escala Concept

  • Regional debut of redesigned XTS sedan
  • Launch of 2018 model line-up, including Escalade, CT6, XT5 and V-Series high-performance cars

 Making its first appearance in the Middle East, the Escala Concept car formed the centerpiece of the Cadillac stand at this year’s Dubai International Motor Show (14-18 November) as visitors received a tantalizing glimpse at the future direction of the brand.

The future is certainly bright for Cadillac, with the Escala amplifying its new design DNA and the brand currently introducing industry-leading technologies such as Super Cruise. But the show also provided an opportunity to view new models that are set to entice today’s buyers: the redesigned XTS sedan enjoyed its regional launch, alongside 2018 versions of favorites like the Escalade, CT6 and XT5.

Designed to be both a driver’s car and an indulgent flagship sedan, Cadillac’s Escala showcases future design and technical systems, including a prototype 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, and is a concept for a more expressive, expansive companion to the current range-topper, the CT6.

The large 4-door sedan features an expansive lift-back design, and at 5347mm is 163mm longer than the CT6. The new face of Cadillac design will begin appearing on production models soon and includes a new expression of Cadillac’s signature vertical lighting – thin, deep-set organic light emitting diode (OLED) elements give it a sinister look. This is complemented by a three-dimensional precision pattern in the grille design and 22-inch wheels with two layers of spokes.

Three very thin, curved OLED screens feature prominently in the front, consolidating the traditional “cluster” of driving gauges into one integrated unit. Like all Cadillac models today, the interior is assembled using hand cut-and-sewn techniques, but is further inspired by suiting material used by Cadillac’s fashion industry partners. The Escala Concept also offers an insight into the user experience in development for future models, with new designs for connectivity and control.

Speaking about Cadillac’s display at DIMS, Andrew Lipman, Cadillac’s Global Communications Director, said: “We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to our customers and fans in the Middle East, and what better way than by revealing a concept car that lays the blueprint for the future of the brand.

“Starting with the launch of the first ever XT4 in 2018, we will bring a new Cadillac to market every six months, a total of five vehicle lines in the space of just two years.  And these models will feature some of the most advanced technology in the automotive industry,” he added.

Super Cruise is a prime example of these advancements. With the ability to take control at any time, it offers the first true hands-free driving experience. Super Cruise takes control in situations like more mundane highway commuting, while in all other conditions the driver can take the wheel to enjoy the vehicle’s exhilarating performance.

Cadillac also unveiled a raft of 2018 models that are set to take the Middle East by storm, most notably the elegant 2018 XTS, which was represented by the XTS Platinum version. Making its regional debut at the show, this redesigned sedan showcases a new generation of Cadillac design and technology,

A new styling approach applied to the 2018 XTS range is communicated through a refreshed front and rear look, with all-new LED headlights and taillamps, fenders, front and rear fascias and grille. An improved chassis provides even greater ride comfort, while enhanced technology delivers a next-generation Cadillac user experience, a dynamic platform that can be adjusted over time to meet a customer’s evolving connectivity needs. With functionality similar to smartphones, the new user experience system provides customers with easier access to the most common features. The more intuitive operation includes a Summary View in which all key applications – climate, audio, phone and navigation – are displayed on one screen.

Two other 2018 models to benefit from Cadillac’s new styling and design were also shown off at the show: the CT6 and XT5. Rounding off the display were the 2018 models of the brand’s flagship large SUV – Escalade, and the ATS-V and CTS-V models from Cadillac’s acclaimed high-performance V-Series.

The 2018 CT6 has all the size, prestige and technology of a large luxury sedan, while offering the driving dynamics and efficiency of a mid-size sport sedan. Built with one of the industry’s most advanced body structures, the CT6 is equipped with an Active Chassis system and either a 3.0L Twin Turbo or 3.6L V6 engine. Hi-tech features include Enhanced Night Vision, Advanced Park Assist and Rear Camera Mirror – an industry first application of full-display technology, combining camera technology with the conventional inside mirror to project an unobstructed view in the mirror.

The XT5 combines spacious luxury and high-tech convenience features to create the perfect crossover. A lightweight construction elevates efficiency and driving performance while the all-new design and structure increases interior space without adding bulk. The 2018 XT5 is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine and advanced all-wheel drive, as well as advanced features such as a rear camera mirror, Apple Carplay & Android auto compatibility, and front- and rear-seat USB capabilities.

Visitors were also able to experience the brand’s flagship model, the 2018 Escalade, which features a new 10-speed automatic transmission and bold new interior and exterior color options. The Escalade has long defined spacious premium driving with its modern design, powerful capabilities and sumptuous amenities that keep luxury firmly in the driver’s seat.

Combining luxury and power in one machine, the Cadillac CTS-V sedan is powered by a supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine, that delivers 640 hp (477 kW), 630 lb-ft of torque (855 Nm) and is mated to a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission. For 2o18, it introduces Apple Watch integration, two additional USB ports in the rear console and a new range of colors.

Joining the CTS-V will be the 2018 ATS-V, with its track-honed design, chassis and suspension elements which complement the car’s 3.6L V6 twin-turbocharged powertrain to provide true track capability, performance and driver control without modifications or special procedures. New for 2018, an advanced next-generation Cadillac user experience with embedded navigation is now available.

New Renault ZOE Long Range model arrives in the Middle East

The new all-electric Renault ZOE Long Range model has arrived in the Middle East. The latest version of Renault’s most popular 100% electric vehicle now boasts a record driving range of 300 Kilometres (real driving conditions) on a single charge – double the distance of the previous generation ZOE model.

Renault was the first car maker to introduce a 100% electric car to the Middle East, and has since been blazing the trail for pure-electric, zero emissions mobility in the region. The new model, launched this week, features Renault’s new Z.E. (zero emissions) 40 battery – a 41kWh unit delivering the longest driving range of any mass-market electric vehicle on sale today.

The ZOE is a compact 5-door city car. With sporty and dynamic styling you have to look closely to see the car is 100% electric. Its electric badge, Z.E. signature headlamps with daytime running lights and rear lights all feature subtle blue styling cues which proudly denote it’s zero emissions status.

Inside, the light and spacious cabin offers a comfortable and peaceful driving experience. A modern touch-screen center console provides a hub for an array of in-car features including climate control, multi-media music and entertainment, and driving performance statistics.

Charging the ZOE is easy using the cables provided and connecting to a power source via the socket cleverly positioned under the Renault badge on the ZOE’s bonnet.

The new Z.E. 40 battery in the new ZOE Long Range model has been developed in partnership with LG Chem and uses cutting-edge high-energy density lithium-ion technology. The unit has been engineered to increase storage capacity without making the battery bigger or significantly heavier. The battery integration in the vehicle, new air circulation system and electronic management system maintains the battery’s temperature at a consistent level; making the car economical to run, even in very high temperatures.

Whilst the ZOE Long Range benefits from extra capacity there has been no impact on charging times. ‘Topping up’ the battery for just 30 minutes provides an additional 80 kilometres of range. With the charging infrastructure in the Middle East growing, in Dubai, new initiatives have been introduced by the Supreme Energy Council meaning EV owners can now charge for free at any public charging station until 2019, as well as benefit from an array of other benefits including free parking*.

Aston Martin unveils special edition Storck bicycle

Aston Martin has collaborated with renowned bicycle manufacturer Storck to produce a limited edition run of road bikes. Just 107 examples of the exclusive Fascenario.3 Aston Martin Edition will be produced. The frame and forks are the result of the latest advances in carbon fibre and aerodynamics, while the componentry is of the highest quality, meaning that the Aston Martin Edition sits at the very pinnacle of current road bicycles.

This project came about after Markus Storck, the eponymous founder and innovative leader of the Storck bicycle company, joined forces with Aston Martin on the Vanquish ‘One of Seven’ project. Having owned several Aston Martins, Storck worked with Aston Martin’s bespoke division, Q by Aston Martin, to develop the septet of special sports cars that focused on showcasing carbon fibre.

During that process, he met Aston Martin’s EVP & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman and they decided to explore the possibility of a joint venture with bicycles. ‘It was clear from the outset how the design, engineering and passion of the two brands could combine’ says Reichman ‘and what we’ve ended up with is a beautiful bicycle that reflects not only many of the key technical aspects of an Aston Martin, but also our ethos of excellence.’

The end result is the Aston Martin Edition – the ultimate evolution of Storck’s Fascenario.3, which has won numerous tests and received multiple awards for its design. The frame weighs just 770g and combined with a host of lightweight items from manufacturers like THM and ZIPP, the whole bike weighs only 5.9kg. However, although it’s light, it’s far from fragile, with Storck greatly exceeding the expected industry testing standards in order to prove the durability of its frames.

The Aston Martin Edition comes equipped with SRAM’s wireless gear shifting technology. Not only does this give the bike a wonderfully uncluttered aesthetic, but the left and right levers operate just like the paddles found behind the steering wheels on Aston Martin’s sports cars – right to go up a ratio and left to go down.

Q by Aston Martin, which usually tailor’s cars to specific customer requirements, was responsible for mixing the bike’s subtle yet distinctive paint. Named Argentum Nero, it is a twist on the company’s classic racing green. Depending on the light in which the bike is viewed, the paint colour changes subtly, appearing a lustrous grey, green or silver. This colour will also appear on a future car collaboration between Storck and Aston Martin.

Carbon fibre is every bit as important in the modern bicycle industry as it is in sports and super car production. To this end the Fascenario.3 frame has been designed with innovative Nano Carbon Technology. The utilisation of nanoparticles in the resin structures of the carbon fibre improves the breaking and splintering behaviour, increasing the flexibility. This leads to enhanced comfort combined with higher component safety.

Storck has also paid particular attention to the types of carbon fibre used and the way that they are laid up in the transverse-oval tube shapes. The aim of any bicycle frame is to have stiffness where it is needed to aid power transfer, but tempered by the desire for comfort. Perhaps the most visual example of this is the bike’s flat-backed seat post, which has a cross section designed to aid flex and therefore compliance. Many of the other components, such as the THM brakes and ZIPP wheels are also made of carbon fibre.

Just as Aston Martin strives to improve the aerodynamics of its cars, so Storck has striven to produce class-leading aerodynamics in its bikes. Parallels can be drawn between the new DB11 and the Fascenario.3 with both going to great lengths to smooth the airflow around the front wheels. Storck achieves this through its distinctive open and wide design of fork, which leaves noticeably more room around the front wheel than with conventional designs, thereby avoiding aerodynamically unfavourable vortices.

A prototype of the bicycle was originally presented at the exclusive Rouleur Classic cycling event last year. During the subsequent 12 months a few changes have been made to items such as the bottom bracket, which is now stiffer, and the brakes, which are now the second generation of THM’s Fibula callipers. In a nod to the tyres used on some of Aston Martin’s road cars, the Storck Fascenario.3 Aston Martin Edition bicycle also now comes equipped with Pirelli’s recently launched high performance P Zero Velo tyres.

The spectacular final production version of the bicycle is being showcased for the first time at the 2017 Rouleur Classic in Victoria House, London. With just 107 being produced, the Fascenario.3 Aston Martin Edition is likely to be a rare sight on the road but it will no doubt be highly sought after by collectors. The final word goes to Markus Storck, who is quietly confident that this collaboration sets a new benchmark: ‘I would say that this is probably the best bicycle ever built with an automotive name on it.’

Groupe Renault has announced Drive The Future, a new six-year global plan to deliver annual revenues of over €70 billion1, achieve a group operating margin of over 7% by the end of the plan, with a floor at 5%, and positive free cash flow every year. Drive The Future is aligned with the Groupe Renault vision: sustainable mobility for all, today and tomorrow.

Renault’s popularity in the Middle East is growing. Sales in the GCC have almost tripled over the past five years, with Renault Groupe’s regional sales in the first half of 2017 up 74% compared with the same time last year. In Africa, the Middle East and India, Renault sold 491,000 vehicles in 2016; under the new strategic plan the French car brand intends to sell over 800,000 units by 2022.

Under the Drive The Future plan, Groupe Renault forecasts that global unit volumes will grow more than 40% to over 5 million units, compared with 3.47 million units2 sold in 2016, as the company expands its product range, including in LCV and new zero-emission electric vehicles and builds on success of its global access range. The plan will also leverage the R&D and global economies of scale from Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, the world’s largest automotive alliance, while maintaining financial discipline and cost efficiency.

Drive The Future will build on the strong foundation of Groupe Renault’s last plan Drive the Change, which resulted in record growth and operating profit, increased synergies gained through the Alliance with Nissan, empowered regions, expanded product mix and leadership in zero-emission vehicles in Europe.

The most powerful Sport Turismo becomes a plug-in hybrid

Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo

Porsche is expanding its hybrid range with a new Panamera Sport Turismo model line. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo flagship model will combine a four-litre V8 biturbo engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 680 hp (500 kW). Even when just above idle speed, the sporty saloon offers 850 Nm of torque, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. The most powerful Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres using solely electric power and therefore producing zero local emissions. It is not just the balance between performance and efficiency that makes this hybrid saloon unique in its segment; its design concept, which features a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and a 4+1 seating configuration, results in the new top performer offering a high standard of everyday usability.

Zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and 3.0-litre fuel consumption
As with the Panamera sports saloon flagship model, Porsche is now also demonstrating the huge performance potential of hybrid technology with the Sport Turismo. The boost strategy used in the series-production all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo has been taken from the Porsche 918 Spyder super sports car. At revs as low as 1,400 rpm, the V8 biturbo (404 kW/550 hp) and the electric motor (100 kW/136 hp) deliver the maximum system torque of 850 Nm. The decoupler integrated into the hybrid module is electro-mechanically controlled via an Electric Clutch Actuator, resulting in shorter response times and a high level of occupant comfort. The fast-shifting, eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmits power to the standard adaptive all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The E-performance drive allows the vehicle to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and a further 8.5 seconds to reach the 200 km/h mark, alongside a top speed of 310 km/h. Even with this level of performance, the plug-in hybrid model is extremely efficient, the result from the NEDC was fuel consumption of 3.0 l/100 km and power consumption of 17.6 kWh/100 km. The Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres and a top speed of 140 km/h when driven solely on electric power, with no emissions. The lithium-ion battery has an energy content of 14.1 kWh and can be charged within 2.4 to 6 hours, depending on the charger and power connection.

Unique design, adaptive roof spoiler and 4+1 seating concept
The Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo offers all of the innovations of the second generation Panamera, including the digitalised Porsche Advanced Cockpit, ground-breaking assistance systems and optional rear-axle steering. Another of these innovations is the roof spoiler, unique in the segment, the pitch is automatically controlled to one of three different angles depending on the driving situation and vehicle settings. The spoiler generates additional downforce of up to 50 kg on the rear axle, under speeds of 170 km/h the aerodynamic guide element – a central system component of the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) – stays in its retracted position at an angle of minus seven degrees to follow the roof line. Above 170 km/h the roof spoiler automatically moves to a performance position with an angle of plus one degree, thereby increasing driving stability and lateral dynamics. In the Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position at speeds of 90 km/h upwards. PAA provides active assistance by adapting the roof spoiler’s angle to plus 26 degrees, when the panoramic sliding roof is open, at 90 km/h or above to compensate for the turbulence created.

The top-of-the-line model has all of the advantages of the new Sport Turismo range and its the avant-garde design. The roof line of the Sport Turismo is raised in comparison to the sports saloon, allowing for easier entry and exit of passengers and provides greater head room. The luggage compartment benefits from the wide opening electrically-operated tailgate, and a leading-edge height of just 628 millimetres. The second row of the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is equipped with three rear seats. The two outside seats are individual seats, keeping with the model line’s ethos of sporty performance with maximum passenger comfort, producing a 2+1 configuration at the rear. Two electrically-adjustable individual seats for the rear can be fitted as an option. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo offers 425 litres of luggage space. The three rear seats can be folded down together or individually (in a 40:20:40 split) and unlocked electrically from the luggage compartment. With the second row folded away the loading volume increases to 1,295 litres.

Extensive standard equipment including ceramic brakes
The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is available with a range of standard equipment. This includes; electronic Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) roll stabilisation system with the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) rear differential lock, high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) braking system, 21-inch alloy wheels in a 911 turbo design, Power Steering Plus and Sport Chrono Package and auxiliary air conditioning as standard. As with all Panamera Sport Turismo models that produce over 440 hp (324 kW) of power, the adaptive three-chamber air suspension is standard including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) for a broad range between a high level of driving dynamics and driving comfort.

The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is available to order now, with the market launch scheduled for January 2018. The basic retail price in the United Arab Emirates is AED 821,900.

Continental introduces fully automated valet parking

Continental Automotive Group, the German company which specialises in tyres and automotive technology, has developed an automated technology solution, enabling cars to valet park without a driver. Recently presented to the public at the 2017 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, the fully automated Valet Parking function was demonstrated in a demo vehicle at Continental’s premises in the city.

Continental’s latest innovative technology has been presented at a time when autonomous driving is an increasingly hot topic in the Middle East as a number of GCC governments have revealed their plans to develop smart cities and boost autonomous driving.

“With valet parking, we have presented a driverless function, which relieves drivers from a tedious procedure,” explained Alfred Eckert, Head of Advanced Technology in Continental’s Chassis & Safety division. “The valet parking function provides drivers with a beneficial service in terms of convenience and time. It is also a concrete step towards modern mobility based on fully automated driving.”

With this new technology, once the driver has exited the vehicle, the car navigates independently through the parking garage barrier, detecting free parking spaces and parks fully autonomously on the first floor. Pedestrians and other vehicles crossing its path are detected and the driving strategy is adapted dynamically. The next stage of development, which Continental’s team of engineers in Germany are working on now, will mean the system can also navigate up and down ramps to other levels in multi-storey parking facilities.

An adaptable system

In the case of the first stage scenario demonstrated for valet parking, the system communicates wirelessly with the entry barrier. For this purpose, a particular communication infrastructure is activated in the barrier to allow access and calculate the time parked through an automatic process. This technology is already available in parking garages, where it is used in the form of a radio frequency identification system for parking permit holders. However, where parking barriers require a ticket for entry, drivers will have to get their tickets manually, drive through the barrier, exit the car, and then hand the rest of the parking procedure over to the vehicle. Upon request, the vehicle will return to the owner with a simple tap on a button on a mobile application for valet parking, leading the car to the exit barrier.

Continental has developed this software to enable vehicles to find a parking space regardless of the infrastructure in a parking garage. The demo vehicle detects its surroundings using four short-range radar sensors, four surround-view cameras and a forward-facing mono camera. Through the use of sensory data and a digital map, the vehicle will determine its exact position in the parking garage and navigate automatically. The sensory-based approach of the valet parking function with ramp navigation is expected to be available to the public by 2022.

Autonomous driving in the Middle East

As a number of GCC governments begin to roll out their own plans, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the unveiling of Continental’s new technology is timely and in line with the focus on developing smart cities and boosting autonomous driving. This includes Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s ongoing goal to make 25 percent of all journeys driverless by 2030, and Saudi Arabia’s plans for the US$ 100 billion King Abdullah Economic City remodelling to better accommodate driverless cars in recognition of potential future demand.

Audi presented the Group’s first all-electric race car in Neuburg on Wednesday night. The Audi e-tron FE04 mirrors the company’s transformation from a classic automobile manufacturer to a forward-thinking mobility provider on the race track.

“After nearly 40 years of being successfully active in motorsport on the highest level, Audi now becomes the first German automobile manufacturer to compete in Formula E in order to test and advance the development of new technologies for production,” says Peter Mertens, Member of the Board of Management, Technical Development, AUDI AG. “Following quattro, TFSI, TDI, hybrid drive and many other innovations, our first single-seater race car is a portent of our product offensive in the field of electric mobility that we are ringing in with the Audi e-tron in 2018.” At the IAA, Audi announced having more than 20 electrified models in its range even before 2025 including Plug-in-hybrids and fully electric cars.

DTM Test Vallelunga

In Formula E, the teams and manufacturers are allowed to develop the powertrain consisting of the motor, transmission, parts of the suspension and the respective software. The combination of the motor and transmission is the centrepiece of the Audi e-tron FE04. The engineers primarily focus on designing the motor-generator unit for ever greater efficiency. To transmit the power to the wheels, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler will be using a high-efficiency transmission with only one gear in the 2017/2018 season.

“Together with our technology partner Schaeffler, we have developed a completely new powertrain,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. “You can immediately tell this by looking at the new carbon housing of the powertrain. The car also sounds different because we’re pursuing new avenues in technology.”

A progressive new livery featuring white, metallic green and black as the basic colours visually distinguishes the Audi e-tron FE04 at first glance clearly from the car in which Lucas di Grassi won the Formula E championship title in July. For the first time in his career, the 33-year-old Brazilian is entering a new season in car number “1” of the title defender and on the occasion of the world premiere in Neuburg he did not let the opportunity pass by of driving the softly whirring new electric race car onto the stage.
