The new all rounder Audi Q2 is perfect for both city drives and off-road adventure as we find out during an action packed junket in the outskirts of Manama city in Bahrain. We fall in love with the model’s vibrant colours, angular styling, the state of the art technology and the mystery the car projects as it surprises us with its energy and confidence at every turn. 

The first part of the car that impressed me was the large luggage compartment which has ample space for shopping, gym and sports accessories and of course shoes. The compact SUV’s low roofline and high window line gives the sporty car a coupe-like look with striking wedge-shaped headlights.

Inside, the all-round visibility is impressive technologies from the full-size class. The driver can use the optional touchpad to scroll through a clearly structured menu, while passengers can surf and stream with smart-phones, tablets and other mobile devices via a Wi-Fi hotspot. The MMI screen is positioned high on the instrument panel as standard.

The driver assistance systems for the Q2 come from the full-size class. Safety is addressed with the standard emergency braking assistant and the car can autonomously maintain a distance to the vehicle ahead, monitor the blind spot and assist in lane keeping. Audi pre sense front uses radar to recognize hazardous situations that can occur with crossing pedestrians or other vehicles in front of the car. The system warns the driver and initiates hard braking if necessary, down to a standstill at low speeds.

The driver gets additional support from the latest-generation park assist.
It can manoeuvre the compact SUV into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. Cross traffic assist rear comes into play when the driver wants to reverse out of a perpendicular parking spot. It monitors the traffic behind the car with its radar sensors.

Audi offers a selection of three engines for the Q2: three TFSI whose power outputs range from 116 hp to 190 hp. The engine program follows the principle of rightsizing. This is about striking the perfect balance between vehicle class, engine displacement, power output, torque and efficiency behaviour in everyday conditions. Engine displacements for the new Audi Q2 are 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 liters.

The top gasoline engine enables the four-cylinder to realize the fuel economy benefits of a downsizing engine in part-load operation, while offering the benefits of an engine with large displacement at higher loads. This results in excellent efficiency and power behavior over the entire engine speed range.

The 2.0 TFSI come standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The hydraulic multi-plate clutch with its electronic control transfers torque nearly entirely to the front wheels in normal driving, but it can redirect torque in a 50:50 ratio to the rear axle.

This is how the quattro drive unites driving pleasure and driving safety, taking them to a new level. Wheel-selective torque control, an intelligent sub-function of the Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC), rounds out the quattro range of functions. The optional Audi drive select handling system lets the driver select between five modes: auto, comfort, dynamic, efficiency and individual. It influences a variety of vehicle systems, including the steering and gear shift characteristics as well as the optional suspension with adaptive damper control.

Customers also have many ways to express their personal style in the elaborately crafted interior. Colors like yellow, orange and red may be selected for inlays, sections of the seats and contrasting stitching. Inlays are also available in white plastic or brushed aluminum.

Seat upholstery choices range from high-end fabrics to fine Nappa leather. At night, the optional LED lighting package makes the interior especially attractive. In the top version, LED light guides illuminate the sculpted inlays at the front of the instrument panel and the center console with homogeneous light.

After a long year of driving German and Japanese cars mainly, I recently ventured out with Arabian Automobiles Company, the exclusive dealer for Renault in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates to try out the All-New 2017 Renault Koleos.

The Koleos is the brand’s International SUV Flagship model and from the driving experience I had around three Emirates, it is well placed to capitalise on the growing global market demand for SUVs. The car features taut, powerful and muscular exterior lines, which create a sturdy and imposing vehicle with a touch of panache.

According to the brand, the concept of the new Koleos is rooted in the design pillar ‘EXPLORE’, which exudes robustness and a taste for adventure. I found the car comfortable, innovative with adequate safety features.

With its new features, improved looks and driving comfort, the Koleos marks the direction, which the Renault brand is advancing towards. The All-Mode 4×4-I technology employed refelcts an easy-to-use system on the dashboard, which offers the choice between 2WD front-wheel drive, 4WD AUTO and a third mode called 4WD LOCK, which enables the driver to select a permanent all-wheel drive.

With the addition of a 2,705 mm wheelbase, it is amongst the longest in its segment. Renault’s designers showcase a smooth and flowing line stretching from the top of the dashboard to the rear of the armrest. The interior felt like a good size for a SUV and perfect for school runs, for a bit of fun on the sand as well as city driving.

Drivers are empowered by an extensive selection of safety focused aids, all of which can be controlled via the R-LINK 2 tablet, including Active Emergency Braking System, Blind Spot Warning, rear view camera, front, rear and side parking sensors and Easy Park Assist. Strips that run from the headlights along the full length of the wings give the front end of the car, a lengthy appearance, radiating dynamism and elegance.

The entertainment offers an easy to use TR-Link 2 tablet that also controls a fully-integrated Bose audio system including 13 high-performance loudspeakers that deliver a rich, clear and balanced surround sound quality plus a navigation system. The features are similar to what I would normally find in premium cars in the SUV segment.

Overall I am glad I finally ventured towards driving French cars which made me leave the showroom with a new perception of the brand and with an urge to return and try out their other models.

The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 has an additional new V6 petrol twin turbo powertrain, replacing a 3.7 petrol engine with 3.0 turbo high output and low output models. The high output provides high 298 kilowatts and 400 HP output, 406 PS torque at 6400 rpm and 475 Nm at 1600 to 5200 rpm.

The Das New Generation 2.0 (Das), which features only on sport grade, has a customisable sport mode that can be fine-tuned to the user’s needs. A smooth ride is guaranteed by an advanced and dynamic digital suspension, which monitors the vehicle’s body roll, pitch and bounce rate, with shock absorbers adjusting accordingly to maintain a flat, stable and controlled ride.

Das also provides a high level of security by reducing steering and floor vibration, whilst adding driver feel through agile handling and flat ride. A new rack-EPS has a 3.0 turbo and 300 HP premium offering better control and predictability, which offers a secure driving experience due to increased linearity of yaw rate and less steering effort. Acceleration is the same or better as HEV, with a luggage volume of 500l, a no idle stop and 19’’alloy wheels.

Global auto aftermarket players turn to Automechanika Dubai 2017 amid upward trend of ME vehicle sales, spare parts demand

Exedy, Meritor, Al Dobowi, among more than 2,000 exhibitors readying for the return of three-day showcase in Dubai

An upward trend of both vehicle sales and spare parts demand across the Middle East has been welcomed by global automotive aftermarket players, as they ready themselves for the return of the region’s largest automotive service industry trade fair in Dubai.

While macroeconomic factors negatively impacted vehicle sales in 2016, analysts Frost & Sullivan expect renewed growth from 2017 onwards. According to their research, new car sales in the Middle East is estimated to grow nine per cent annually, reaching 4.4 million by 2020, and bringing the total number of vehicles in operation to 44.5 million.

That coupled with an average vehicle age of nearly eight years means demand for automotive aftermarket products and services in the Middle East is also on an upward growth curve; revenue from engine and car components, systems, tyres, and auto accessories, is estimated to reach US$17.27 billion by 2020, growing annually by 5.9 per cent.

A regional market full of opportunity will be underlined by Automechanika Dubai 2017, where more than 2,000 exhibitors from 55 countries will showcase their latest wares to thousands of trade buyers and decision makers from throughout the Middle East, Africa, and further afield.

Taking place from 7-9 May 2017 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, the annual three-day event will arrive with the biggest aftermarket brands on-board, spread over six product sections of Parts & Components; Electronics & Systems; Accessories & Customising; Repair & Maintenance; Car Wash, Care & Reconditioning; and Tyres & Batteries.

With more than 1,400 exhibitors combined, Parts & Components, and Electronics & Systems comprise the largest portion of Automechanika Dubai, and features global stalwarts such as brakes manufacturer Brembo from Italy, Delphi from the UK, and Japanese drivetrain systems manufacturer, Exedy.

Toshihiro Abe, the Vice-president of Exedy, said the company hopes it can maintain its market share, with the forecasts in the regional market painting a positive picture for its future business.

“We’ve generated new business for our automatic clutches while trade is also growing in Africa in recent years,” said Abe. “Exedy continues to hold a large share in both domestic and international markets, establishing 40 group companies and covering 23 countries worldwide.

“Our participation at Automechanika Dubai will increase our brand awareness and promote our products, both for existing customers and new prospects. In this way we hope to expand our business to African and the South Asian markets,” he added.

Meritor, the world’s largest independent manufacturer of axles for the heavy duty industry, is returning to Automechanika Dubai 2017 for the third straight year. The American-headquartered Fortune 500 Company views the Middle East and African automotive aftermarket as one of its key growth markets.

Stefan Kaltenbach, the Managing Director for Meritor in Europe and the Middle East and Africa, said: “We want to grow in the Middle East, where we recognise a great potential of cooperation with parts distributors and potential fleets.”

“Automechanika Dubai is becoming one of our most important platforms for meeting customers and having the chance to display our company and our offerings, while it also enables us to explore new territories and meet trading companies operating in their respective markets. We are excited to be able show our competencies in coaches and buses, trucks and trailers with existing and new product ranges.”

Added Kaltenbach: “Spare parts demand for buses and coaches continues to grow across the region, for which we have exciting new solutions that customers in Europe and also in the Middle East trust in.”

Elsewhere, UAE-based Al Dobowi, an eminent global player at the forefront of tyre and battery industry, is among the 200-plus exhibitors at Automechanika Dubai’s Tyres & Batteries section.

From research and design, manufacturing and distribution, to retail and service, Al Dobowi is involved in every aspect of tyre management solutions, and also the largest battery manufacturer in the region.

“Automechanika Dubai has been a good platform for networking ever since we participated in its very first edition,” said Surender Kandhari, the Chairman of Al Dobowi Group.

“It has now grown significantly as showcased by its various versions in other cities. The Dubai exhibition has driven annual increase of exhibitors and visitors alike giving us opportunity to engage with industry partners and peers mostly from Middle East, Africa and Asia.”

Automechanika Dubai’s global influence is underlined by the presence of more than 20 country pavilions and 35 international trade associations, while 90 per cent of exhibitors, and 51 per cent of visitors are expected to come from outside of the UAE.

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Automechanika Dubai’s organiser, said: “Automechanika Dubai is already among one of the world’s top five international trade fairs for the automotive aftermarket, and what makes it unique is that it connects suppliers from all over the world with a diverse mix of visitors that would otherwise be virtually impossible to reach.

It’s an important stage to open dialogue with existing contacts, find solutions to any issues they’re facing, and plan business strategies year-on-year. It’s also an ideal opportunity for automotive aftermarket stakeholders to bring technical awareness to the market, and this is something we’ll look to build on in the coming years,” he added.

Ram Trucks Line Up to Spearhead Brand’s Growth

Since inception, the Ram Truck Brand has steadily emerged as an industry leader with one goal: to build the best pickup trucks and commercial vehicles in the industry. Recently I ventured into the desert with a group of motoring journalists to test the latest RAM Trucks. Growing up on the coastal as well as the highland terrain of the Fiji Islands, I developed an affinity with trucks early in life, as it was the main mode of transport for many who ventured outside the city regularly. Getting into the Ram trucks brought back memories of adrenalin packed drives into challenging terrains that only trucks can handle.

The Middle East is one of the key markets selected to spearhead the Ram brand’s expansion outside North America, where it has achieved significant success since becoming a stand-alone brand in 2009, winning numerous prestigious awards along the way. The brand, which only makes trucks, has rapidly built a strong reputation as a truck specialist.

FCA Middle East has confirmed that the Ram brand portfolio available in the region has grown significantly in response to customer demand, with the majority of new models available in showrooms straight away.

The Ram 1200 metric ton pickup, which joins a much-expanded line-up of larger, highly capable Ram 1500 trucks, gives the brand access to the largest truck segment in the Middle East.

“Ram is a key pillar of our expansion plans and will grow from six percent to represent 15 percent of our business, and even more over in the coming years,” said Maurizio Zuares, CEO of FCA Middle East.

“We listened to customers in order to deliver the products that they are looking for, and the result is an expanded Ram 1500 line up with many more regular cab and crew cab options, plus the addition of a metric ton pickup, which completes the Ram line up and allows us to compete in a segment where we were previously absent.”

According to FCA Middle East’s estimates, 2016 saw trucks accounting for 13 percent of total vehicle sales in the region, making it the second most important segment.

“While there are many opportunities in the Middle East, there are pre-requisites to ensure success. That’s why we believe that having a clear strategy for the future is essential, and we’re confident that we have everything in place to become a serious player in these important segments,” added Zuares.

 FCA Middle East’s strategy is based on a combination of the right products that have been extensively tested in the region, plus a strong focus on maximising the potential of the Ram brand in the Middle East.

Layered on top of that is a no-compromise commitment to both retail and business customers, combining great products with competitive prices and ensuring easy accessibility through a wide regional network. The Ram 1500 line up grows from three models to nine, with the introduction of the new Express, Sport, Big Horn, Longhorn and Limited models, with the eagerly anticipated Ram Rebel arriving around the middle of the year.

“From the new 1500 Express, which will appeal to customers looking for an affordable truck without compromising on design, to the sheer luxury of the Longhorn and Limited, which are targeted at customers looking for no compromise on luxury, there’s now a Ram for everyone,” said Robert J. The current ST, SLT and Laramie models will also continue as part of the new range, which also includes 4 x 2 and 4 x 4 variants. All are powered by the legendary 5.7-litre HEMI® V8 and the new Express model also has the distinction of being the most powerful regular cab truck available in the Middle East.

The Ram 1200, available in the market immediately, comes in both single and double cab and 4 x 2 (rear-wheel drive) and 4 x 4 configurations, with two trim levels and the choice of petrol and diesel engines – all versions have a maximum height of 1,775 mm, are up to 1,785 mm wide with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. Payload capacity is up to 1,165 kg, and it can tow up to 3 metric tons.

The two engine options are a 2.5-litre diesel with a power output of 94 kW (126 hp) to 100 kW (134 hp) or a 2.4-litre petrol engine that delivers 97 kW (130 hp). A manual gearbox is standard for both the diesel and petrol engines.

Audi RS 7 Sportback performance

Added to the sporty profile of the RS7, the first experience I had behind the wheel reiterated this model’s performance coupled with outstanding efficiency. In other words, the overall impression it left me with after a few days was its supercar performance while it being deceptive with an exterior of a day to day heading to office or meetings type of wheels.

 Under the hood of the RS7 is a 4.0 TFSI engine with 605 hp and up to 750 Nm of torque push acceleration (3.7 seconds) nearly to levels usually reserved for supercars. Fuel consumption remains unchanged at 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers, corresponding to 221 g CO2 per km.

The RS high-performance model sprints like supercars from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the respective base RS model. With the optional dynamic package, top speed can be increased from 250 to 280 and 305 km/h, respectively.

The actual drive experience was comfortable using the Audi Drive Select with the tiptronic and the optional sport differential. The car easily switches between the auto, comfort and dynamic modes and comes with trend setting technologies.

The elegant and sporty interior of the RS 7 performance offers the seats in the color combination black and blue with the optional RS performance design package. The dial instruments feature black faces, white dials and red needles add to the look and feel.

Audi’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) system makes entertainment, communication and navigation easy and user friendly with a pop-up screen on the dash. If I were to buy this model, I would opt for the Comfort Seating package with massage option “contour” seats.

For the exterior, the most attractive eye catching elements include the sportily designed bumpers, the gloss black honeycomb grille typical of the RS models and the flared side sills. The RS performance-specific exterior also features a quattro logo on the air inlet duct and striking add-on parts in matt titanium look.

Overall, the RS7 comes with the perfect combination of horsepower, ample legroom and boot space, seductive exterior and all the best qualities one looks for when investing in an executive car that thrills and turns heads.
