Kia’s First-Ever Pickup Makes Its Mark From City Streets to Desert Trails

Shereen Shabnam

Kia has entered a new chapter with the Kia Tasman, its first purpose-built pickup truck designed to combine bold design, real-world practicality and capable performance. In a region where adventure and utility often intersect, the Tasman arrives as a versatile companion for everything from tough job sites to weekend explorations beyond the city limits.

During our test drive across varied terrain, from central Dubai roads to the open highways and gravel roads, the Tasman proved it is much more than a commuter vehicle. It is a tool, a companion and a statement on wheels.

Exterior

The Tasman’s presence is immediately striking. Its bold front grille and rugged bumper give it a commanding look that feels ready for work or weekend adventure. High-clearance bodywork and muscular fender flares underline its off-road capabilities, while LED lighting adds a modern touch to its tough exterior. Measuring a full-size pickup length with robust proportions, the Tasman balances rugged utility with sharper design details, strong body lines and a purposeful stance that looks confident on urban roads as well as rougher desert tracks.

Interior

Step inside and the cabin reflects Kia’s evolution beyond compact SUVs. The interior feels wide and purposeful, with supportive seats and thoughtful ergonomics that make both city driving and long cross-country journeys comfortable. The dashboard is designed around practicality and technology, with clear displays and intuitive controls that remain easy to use even while driving. The second-row space is generous, making the Tasman feel more like a passenger-friendly pickup than a bare-bones work truck .

Technology

The Tasman is certainly well-equipped on tech. A large touchscreen infotainment system integrates navigation, media and connectivity features, while dual digital displays keep essential information visible with minimal distraction. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support seamless smartphone integration.

Safety and driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and optional 360-degree cameras, tools that make highway cruising and tight parking manoeuvres much easier.

Performance

Under the bonnet, the Tasman offers capable powertrains tailored to varied needs. The most common setup in the UAE pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, producing around 277 hp and 421 Nm of torque, enough grunt for confident overtaking and loaded journeys.

Four-wheel drive variants ensure traction on gravel, desert sand or wet roads, while multiple drive modes let you tailor the vehicle’s response to terrain. On highways, it feels compliant and stable; off-road, it inspires confidence with strong torque delivery and responsive steering. Towing capacity is strong with up to 3,500 kg, making the Tasman suitable for hauling trailers, boats or gear for outdoor adventures.

Our Verdict

The 2026 Kia Tasman does not just mark Kia’s entry into the pickup segment. It raises the bar for what a versatile midsize truck should be. It balances working-class capability with everyday comfort and modern technology, giving drivers the confidence to tackle city commutes, desert trails and long-distance hauls without compromise. For UAE drivers looking for a rugged yet refined pickup that is equally at home on asphalt or sand, the Tasman stands out as a well-rounded, capable and surprisingly comfortable choice and a worthy contender in the pick up truck segment.
