Volvo Cars are known for their safety standards and after testing a few models on the tracks a few years ago, it was a delight to get behind the wheels of the performance-oriented Volvo V60 Polestar.
The S60 and V60 Polestar cars are the result of nearly two decades of racing experience and know-how from exploring the limits of Volvo cars, combining everyday performance, safety, full optimum control among many other new features all in just one package.
Testing the V60 was a special experience as it brought back memories of the past driving Volvo in different environments. As Volvo, Polestar maintains the same level of safety technologies dedicated to its high-end racing engineering that ensures optimized control, stopping power, and responsiveness making both models the safest road cars to be driven in the world.
Reflecting the increased performance of the V60 Polestar, the positive aerodynamic effects have been achieved through subtle, yet efficient, modifications based on data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel. The interiors of the cars have been reworked with new details, materials and Polestar colours with the sole purpose of increasing driver support and control.
The six-cylinder 3.0 litre turbo-charged T6 engine has also undergone extensive development with a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler to produce 350 HP at 5700 rpm and 500 Nm already at 3000 rpm.
The automatic gearbox of six-speed transmission features a new paddle shift system that together with the Polestar developed Haldex four-wheel drive system takes the car from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and to a limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The gearbox along with the 4WD system and traction control system has been recalibrated in order to provide an active driving experience and maximum grip in all situations but given the short test time of a few days, city driving proved a pleasant experience.
For this model, upgrades also include modifications made to increase rigidity of the chassis to cater for the 80% stiffer springs relative to the standard S60 R-Design. These changes combined with the tailored high performance Öhlins shock absorbers and 20” Polestar wheels results in a precise, yet comfortable, driving experience.
It is worth mentioning that Volvo Cars has acquired 100 per cent of Polestar, including the Polestar brand. Polestar will now be used as the model name for special high performance Volvos.
Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar are both available in four colours – blue, white, black and silver.
