When Formula E arrives in Tokyo, Nissan Formula E Team is doing more than celebrating motorsport by paying homage to an era that shaped Japan’s automotive identity through design, creativity and community.
Created for the Tokyo E-Prix, The NISMO Pit is an immersive pop-up experience inspired by Japan’s legendary 1990s underground car culture, where late-night gatherings, modified performance cars and an uncompromising passion for craftsmanship became a defining part of the country’s automotive DNA.
At the heart of the experience is a collaboration with acclaimed Japanese designer Kenichi Minami, whose nostalgic visual language and contemporary interpretation of Japanese aesthetics have earned international recognition. His bespoke creative direction transforms The NISMO Pit into a striking visual narrative that blends the energy of Formula E with the unmistakable character of Nissan’s NISMO heritage.
Drawing inspiration from the illuminated red rear lights of the Nissan Formula E race car, Minami developed a bold graphic identity that captures the sensation of speed, movement and electrification while remaining rooted in the minimalist elegance of Japanese design.
The installation also showcases a special one-off livery for Nissan Formula E Team’s GEN3 Evo race car. Designed exclusively for its home race weekend, the striking finish reinterprets the iconic NISMO road-car palette, pairing sophisticated shades of grey and black with signature red highlights while preserving the team’s distinctive cherry blossom motif—a subtle nod to Japanese identity.
Beyond contemporary motorsport, visitors are invited to explore Nissan’s rich performance legacy through vehicles from the brand’s Heritage Collection alongside carefully curated modified road cars presented in partnership with Tokyo-based community NowhereToGo. Together they celebrate the craftsmanship, individuality and engineering excellence that continue to inspire enthusiasts around the world.
Classic diner-inspired dining, live DJ performances and an atmosphere reminiscent of Tokyo’s iconic street meets complete the experience, transporting guests to a time when neon-lit streets became gathering places for a generation united by a shared love of performance, design and self-expression.
More than a fan activation, The NISMO Pit is an artistic tribute to Japan’s enduring influence on global automotive culture—where heritage, innovation and design converge to create an experience that is as visually compelling as it is emotionally resonant.
